25 Tips to Improve Your Phone PhotographyAn email from SanDisk

In this post I will share with you 25 tips to improve your phone photography, in video form. But before I do, let me tell you a little about how this all came about.

Way back in January this year, I received an email from the very lovely people over at SanDisk.

They told me they wanted to engage with more smartphone photographers, that they would be creating an online series of ‘expert tips’ videos about phone photography, that they’d be working with a pro photographer on this, and that they wanted him to have a co-host who was into phone photography.

They were after someone with an interest in travel, food, and social media, and they wondered if I’d be interested?

*nods, maniacally*

A fantastic experience

What a great project this was. It was something completely new to me, and a completely terrific experience; I’m still so chuffed these guys wanted me to be a part of this. I’m not sure why they thought I’d be any good (there was little on my YouTube channel at the time to indicate I had any experience with something like this, or that I’d be any good at it), but they took a punt on me, and I’m really grateful for it.

This was the beginning of fantastic project which culminated just last week, with the five phone photography videos finally out of production, and ready to be shared.

About a month after that initial email, I spent a totally terrific two days filming alongside internationally renowned and multiple award-winning photographer Joao Carlos (the pro photographer they mentioned).

That was pretty awesome in itself – I’ve never hung out with a big time photographer before. He also happens to be a really top guy – we had a lot of laughs. Which was very necessary to battle through Storm Doris.

The *very cold* filming days

Remember Doris Day? It was 23rd February, in case you forget.

The day a big ol’ storm hit the UK, with gusts of up to 94 mph. We were outside in Shoreditch filming in that, for a good eight hours. What lols. A challenge for all of us – Joao and I, and the film crew.

Some of the videos look like we’re using a wind machine. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever been so cold in my life. Well, that’s a lie. The coldest I’ve ever been was definitely in Iceland one December, trying (and failing) to see the Northern Lights. Second was New York this past December, just a month before this filming took place. So this probably takes third place.

But despite the strong winds and being frozen to the bone, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had when it comes to the opportunities my little corner of the internet has given me.

It was my first time around a film crew, and my first time presenting, and I loved every minute. There was even a make-up artist (totally necessary for the 4.30am start). It felt proper and professional, and every single person involved was an absolute dream to work with. What a great bunch of guys.

Here’s a montage of some behind the scenes footage I took on my phone. These are basically the Instagram Stories I posted over the two days, knitted together into a video, hence the portrait orientation. Capturing the silliness:

And *drum roll*, here are the five final videos sharing tips on how to improve your phone photography. Each covers a different aspect of phone photography, and each provides five tips. They’ve been subtitled into six languages (😮), and shared across all the SanDisk platforms – how cool.

I learnt loads from Joao, so these are really worth watching. Not just for the unrelenting Doris action. Huge thanks to the film crew and production team on creating such a lovely set of videos, that I’m really proud to be a part of. And endless thanks to Joao and everyone else involed in this project. What a pleasure it’s been.

Cool videos! I watched all of them. I’m not a photographer, but I like beautiful pictures so much. And I have a lot of problems with making photos by iPhone. Hopefully, now I’ll avoid the, 🙂
    Thanks again!
